Moving to a new home can be exciting, but changing schools adds another layer of planning for families.

When you are moving with kids, preparing for the school transition early can help you avoid last-minute paperwork and make the new routine easier to understand.

1. Confirm the School and Enrollment Requirements

Do not assume a mailing address automatically tells you which school your child will attend. School boundaries and enrollment procedures can vary by district. Once you know the new address, check directly with the applicable school district for current attendance zones, registration requirements, required documents, transportation information, and important dates.

2. Gather School and Personal Records Early

Before packing gets hectic, create a folder for school-related records and documents you may need during registration. Depending on the district and your family’s situation, that may include identification, proof of residence, school records, health documentation, special education records, custody documents, and other information requested by the school.

Keep important records with you rather than packing them into a moving truck or portable storage container.

3. Think Through the Timing of the Move

A move may happen during summer, in the middle of a grading period, or close to the beginning or end of the school year. Once your moving dates are known, contact the current and new schools to understand the process for transferring records and handling attendance, assignments, or orientation activities.

4. Help Kids Become Familiar With the New Routine

Children may feel more comfortable when they know what to expect. When possible, review the school’s website, look at the route to school, talk about the daily schedule, and attend available orientation or welcome events.

5. Keep First-Week Essentials Easy to Find

School supplies, backpacks, uniforms or clothing, lunch items, medications, and important documents should not be buried in boxes. Create a clearly labeled first-week box or bag so the family can get through the first few school days even if the rest of the house is still being unpacked.
